Welcome to Segmentedturning.co.uk. My name is Gordon Dennis I live in a small village in Wales called Ystalyfera. I have been turning on and off for some time now, but recently I became interested in segmented turning. This involves cutting segments, typicaly 16 and gluing them together in a ring, then gluing the rings together into a predetermined shape and turning it on the lathe. This is a great way to get the shape you want as you are not constrained by the piece of timber. It is a very economical method of turning, good for the pocket and the environment, but not a method for the impatient as it can take a week or more to make just 1 piece. many wood turners just want to chuck a piece of wood on the lathe and get something from it without really having to think about design, this is something I myself have done but I started to see the amount of timber being wasted typicaly up to 70% of the timber would be on the floor unusable as a pile of shavings. another plus point is that you can buy the split boards at the timber merchant which they generally sell a bit cheaper, so even more savings, when your turning on a budget every little helps. Visit the galleries all the pieces are individual and are signed and dated.
